Post One In A Series
Welcome to the first post in our series diving deep into RC 1:4 Scale RC motorcycles. As a dedicated RC Motorcycle specialist at Holeshothobbies.com.au, I've extensively tested and analysed the latest newcomers in the category - the LOSI PROMOTO and the X-RIDER CRS. Before we explore the features, benefits, and technologies of these bikes, it’s worth taking a look at the brief history and challenges faced by off-road RC Motorcycles in the 1:4 scale category.
BRIEF HISTORY: OFF-ROAD INNOVATIONS, CHALLENGES AND EVOLUTION
Historically, the biggest challenge for off-road RC motorcycles has revolved around stability and traction on loose and slippery surfaces, with previous models relying on a mechanical flywheel in the rear wheel to provide the necessary traction and stability off-road. The evolution began with systems driven by the momentum of the spinning rear wheel, however, inefficiencies and inconsistent stability plagued these early attempts. The next leap in their evolution involved powering the flywheel separately for constant speed, but this came with new handling issues with the weight and gyroscopic forces from the back wheel. ARX Racing achieved a significant breakthrough when they introduced the concept of placing the flywheel in the bike chassis, transforming handling while maintaining off-road stability. While ARX Racing closed its doors in 2017, their achievement laid the foundation for today's advancements and developments to the bikes.
Despite claims from some companies that these two new additions are the first RC Motorcycles to work - It is factually important to note that the 1:4 scale class has thrived for over 15 years, offering large, visually appealing bikes with successful performance. More accurately, the Losi Promoto and X-Rider CRS, are the first to excel in the off-road category, specifically in technology advancements in tires, electronics and suspension evolution.
The LOSI PROMOTO and X-RIDER CRS represent the latest evolution with chassis-mounted flywheel gyroscopes, making them ideal for off-road use and the first in their class capable of racing on 1:8 size off-road tracks. Now that’s exciting!
THE FLYWHEEL GYROSCOPE:
The flywheel gyroscope in these RC Motorcycles serves dual functions: providing stability and traction in off-road conditions and serving as a crucial aid for beginners learning to control the motorcycle. It plays a pivotal role in developing the skills needed to eventually run the bike without the aid of the flywheel in on-road conditions. Additionally, the LOSI PROMOTO MX incorporates the new MS6X stability control system from Spektrum, offering unique features with some downsides, which we'll explore in detail in coming posts in this series.
X-RIDER CRS SNAPSHOT FEATURES AND BENEFITS:

MY TAKEAWAYS:
Firstly, my experience with both the LOSI PROMOTO and the X-RIDER CRS had led me to conclude that they each have their own unique strengths. The LOSI PROMOTO maintains its reputation for reliability, while the X-RIDER CRS introduces innovative features that cater to the adventurous racer seeking more control and realism.
Whichever way you lean, the resounding benefit is RC racers and enthusiasts like me and you get to have more fun on and off the track and ultimately build up the 1:4 scale RC Moto category!
